I see it all the time. Homeowners invite a contractor in for a “free” survey, and the report comes back recommending expensive chemical injections. Along with specialist re-plastering. Sometimes no real issue exists, or the actual cause gets misidentified. In some cases, the ‘surveyor’ labels it as rising damp because that’s how they earn their commision.
In many cases, these surveys are more of a sales pitch than a diagnosis. The contractor earns money by selling treatments, not by giving impartial advice. No honest damp proofing contractor survives by offering free surveys. That’s why a free survey can be risky, because it incentivises the surveyor to find a problem. Even if it isn’t the real issue. I’ve seen free surveys go spectacularly wrong. A homeowner calls them in, and within minutes the salesman tells them their walls are ‘saturated with rising damp’ and recommends chemical injections across the entire ground floor. Its all to familiar and it gives my industry a bad name.
Now I must say that not all contracting companies are like this but a lot of them are.
